In one of our seminars a few weeks ago we looked into FCP job roles. We talked about what stage of the FCP process we enjoy the most and what interests us. From this we thought about what kind of job/sector we might be suited to in the future…
The only thing that can sustain my attention for more than 5 minutes other than music is visuals. Subconsciously I’ve always scrutinised the way things look, how I might change them or take inspiration from certain aspects. Naturally I am drawn towards the concept and outcomes stages of the FCP process because it revolves around visual storytelling.
Whether a zine spread, a painting or just a leaflet I always find myself having a strong opinion on what I love or dislike about something.
From a young age I began being really interested in typography, using bubble writing at any chance I could get in school work, even doing it for other people because I enjoyed doing it so much. When I reached year 10 I realised that typography had a much deeper effect on how a viewer receives a message than I thought. Typography itself can embody an era, a movement, even aspirations. This is when I discovered my love for editorial zines. There is so much play involved with the placement and composition of copy, and its relationship with image. At this time I also had a love for graphic posters, my all-time favourite being ‘Make Art Not War’ (1963) by Bob and Roberta Smith.

In sixth from I switched from graphic design to art and I discovered that there were so many more disciplines than I had not previously been exposed to. I found that whilst I still had a love for typography and copy, I was also interested in architecture, mix media and photography. Being in art completely changed the style of visuals I was into. I try to visit as many art exhibitions as I can because every show allows you to be submerged within a new concept.
As well as art, I have always liked exploring different narratives through literature. Whether dystopian, poetic, historical or romantic I love the creation of a story where you are able to place yourself inside a narrative. To me music is the same as literature in the way that every song evokes a different emotional reaction. Different decades, genres and remixes within music each carry their own story through sound.
So where can all this take me?
Fashion branding, and marketing communications is something where design and concept are central. The visuals of a brand have to coincide with their brand ethos and concept. From my time during my graphics course I realised I like working to a brief, given guidelines to work within. If I am given too much creative freedom I find it too overwhelming and difficult to complete the task. I love print; layout and typography so fashion graphic design is something I think I would be interested in, maybe as part of a creative agency.
